Review Of The Panasonic Viera TX-L37V10B 1080P Plasma Television

The recently released Viera TXL37V10B LCD television is Panasonic's answer to the new trend of TVs adding compatibility with as many formats available. With a 37 inch (94cm) screen, limited Internet connectivity, and support for a wide range of video formats, the Panasonic TXL37V10B can handle almost any role.

Panasonic claims the Viera has a dynamic contrast ratio of 100,000:1. This extraordinarily high number is meaningless because there is no standard for measuring dynamic contrast. "Dynamic" contrast is a system of boosting actual contrast performance by varying the backlight to match the brightness of the video. The contrast ratio of the screen itself is a very respectable 20,000:1. Real world performance can't match plasma or LED backlit sets, but it still manages impressive blacks and accurate colour reproduction.

Video to the TX-L37V10B is handled by four HDMI input ports, with one at the bottom for use if the screen is wall-mounted. Legacy support for S-Video and composite connections has been dropped. The TV can access digital video files from its SD memory card slot. Freesat HD is supported directly, allowing users to directly connect a satellite dish to view free programming from the BBC and ITV, while pay satellite can be added thanks to two SCART ports.

The remote control is well designed with very large buttons and clear labels. Most functions can be accessed with a single push of a button, or with Panasonic's Viera Link interface, which has a very intuitive user interface. Viera Cast adds Internet connectivity, but only to sites approved by Panasonic, making it less of a browser and more of an Internet-enabled media device. YouTube is one of these approved media portals, although newly added videos may take a day or two to show up.

The TXL37V10B converts video from fifty frames a second (50hz) to one hundred frames a second (100hz) for smoother motion and transitions, all but eliminating screen jitter. This set lacks upscale processing for standard definition video, but will still show SD broadcasts with minimal distortion.

Sound performance, like many LCD TV's, is lacking due to limited space. There are two small speakers inside the unit using Panasonic's V-Real ProSound surround sound, which can't produce much bass, but is acceptable for broadcast television. Movie buffs will want to install an external system to get the most out of their movies; this can be done through the set's optical output.
